Like most products we consume, CBD has a shelf life and it can often be very hard to determine what that shelf life actually is.
Sometimes food and drink can start to expire before the date stated on the packaging, and sometimes it can last for a lot longer than the label claims.
CBD oil is no exception, and sometimes the information regarding expiration dates on the packaging can be a little misleading. Some people believe that CBD oil can’t go bad, but is this true?
If it is true, how can we give our CBD cartridges more longevity to prevent waste and save money? That’s what we’ll be looking at in our article today!
What Is Vaporization?
Vaporization is still a fairly new method of inhaling the active ingredients or cannabinoids in cannabis. Vaporizing cannabis gives you a quick hit of the effects of CBD and THC, much like smoking cannabis does.
This can be particularly beneficial for sufferers of chronic pain.
But unlike smoking, vaporization – like the name suggests – lets you inhale cannabinoids through a vapor instead of a cloud of smoke. Plus, as there is no combustion, vaporization is also a lot easier on your lungs and airways.
How Does A Single CBD Vape Cartridge Last?
Knowing how long a single vape cartridge will last can help you save money and make economical purchases suited to your needs. To work out the shelf life of your vape cartridges, consider the following:
- How potent the cannabis oils are.
- How big the cartridge is.
- How long you inhale on each puff.
- How many times you vape through the day.
Vape cartridges are normally sold in sizes of 500 mg and 1,000 mg. You may also see them labelled as 0.5 gram and 1 gram.
A 1,000 mg cartridge will last for around 300 seconds of total inhale time. You can divide this by the inhalation time to figure out how many puffs it will last.
For instance, if you inhale lightly and your puffs last about 3 seconds, you will get 100 puffs out of that cartridge.
If you just vape once a day – such as in the morning or before you go to bed – one cartridge will likely last you over 3 months.
Meanwhile, if you use cannabis to relieve pain, you may inhale for just 6 seconds around 5 times a day. In this instance, a 1-gram cartridge would last for around 10 days.
Besides the amount of puffs you take and how long you puff, the temperature you use to vape will also make a difference to your cartridge’s shelf life. Warmer temperatures will make the vapor more potent, but also drain your cartridges quicker.
Does CBD Oil Go Bad?
Almost every CBD product can take a dip in quality and lose its potency or flavor once it’s reached the expiry date printed on the packaging. Often, CBD products have a ‘best by’ label, while some also have a ‘sell by’ date.
Some brands will have packaging that tells you when the product was manufactured and leaves it up to you to decide when to stop using the product.
These expiration dates are often cautious estimates, however, as there have been no studies published yet that measure the efficacy of CBD over time.
It’s also hard to tell how much strength the CBD oil loses over time, (see also: When Is The Best Time To Take CBD Oil?)but it’s generally considered that CBD products are at their best for up to two years.
How Can You Tell If CBD Has Gone Bad?
Luckily most of us will use our CBD products before they lose their potency or reach their expiration date(see also: Does CBD Have An Expiration Date? How To Check Its Safe To Use). Still, there are a few ways to tell if your CBD is still good to use.
If you like to take a more cautious approach to expiration dates, you can just stick to the expiration date printed on the packaging and dispose of the CBD before the date.
If you use CBD products to relieve certain health conditions, you will be able to tell if it loses its efficacy.
Plus, much like when food spoils, the flavor of the CBD oil is a good indicator of whether it’s spoiled. If it tastes a little musty or even a bit rotten, then the product has expired.
How Can You Make CBD Oil Last Longer?
For those who want to prolong the shelf life of their CBD products, there are a few simple ways you can do this.
Adhering to good storage practices can extend the shelf life of CBD, even though we can’t be totally sure of how long the CBD will keep its full therapeutic strength.
Firstly, keep your CBD stored away from the elements as much as you can. Light, heat, and oxygen can wear away the carrier base and the cannabidiol in CBD. This isn’t difficult, you just need to remember to;
- Store CBD products in a dark, cool place.
- Keep products away from light (particularly direct sunlight) and humidity.
- Make sure you screw the lids and caps tight.
- If the CBD oil smells or tastes bad, it’s best to get rid of it.
Leaving CBD products in a car, in a cabinet next to a stove, or on a shelf in direct sunlight will cause it to spoil quicker.
If you buy a range of CBD products because you like having some variety, we recommend storing the oldest products at the front of the shelf so you’ll naturally use those first and be mindful of the dates.
Final Thoughts
We hope our article has given you a bit more clarification on how long vape cartridges last, so you can organize your purchases better and store your CBD products in the optimal way.
If you’re a casual user of CBD, it’s normally better to buy one cartridge at a time so you can avoid spoiling the products. With the right care, most cartridges should last for six months to a year without affecting the flavor or potency.
